Gangaur Celebration : A Colorful Affair In Rajasthan

Every year the festival of Gangaur is observed in the state of Rajasthan during the month of March-April.  Traditionally the festival celebrates Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, however there is a lot more to the festival then meets the eye. For those who want to know, Gangaur is not just a one day festival where people offer their prayers to the deities. The festival holds a lot more than that.idolsGangaur is preceded by Sinjara, a day when women dress up, pamper themselves and put beautiful designs made by Heena on their hands. The women celebrate Sinjara by adorning themselves with beautiful jewellery and clothing and also by eating traditional sweet Ghewar. In the city of Jaipur this is the day when women prepare for the festival of Gangaur too. People bring beautiful idols of Isar and Gangaur (Shiva and Parvati) in their house and women design beautiful clothes for the idols along-with preparing sweets.isar-gangaurThe next day, on the festival of Gangaur, women come together in groups and pray to the Goddess Parvati for blissful married life. The rituals performed during the festival are also very beautiful and have been performed by the women of Rajasthan for centuries. Isar and Gangaur, adorned in beautiful clothing, are placed on a beautiful stage of made of flowers and grass. Women then festoon their head with Tika, hands with Heena and beautify their eyes with kohl.  The whole ceremony is accompanied with beautiful Folk Songs that women keep singing.pooja

grassAnyone who visits this festival ceremony for the first time will definitely be charmed by the beauty, simplicity and colors of the festival.  Post the ceremony one can easily notice many small dots (Bindis) of different colors made with turmeric, vermilion, Kohl and heena that are put by women as a part of festival’s rituals, on the wall.  The festivities do not end here, in the evening, Isar and Gangaur, are again treated with sweets and then fed water. dotsOn the day of Gangaur Pink City gets to see a royal Gangaur procession, which starts from City Palace, find its way through the Pink City and ends at talkatora. Over the years, numbers of festivals and fairs have changed in nature – however, the procession has retained its traditional charm. The tourists and visitors get to witness the traditional dances and performances throughout the procession.2015 aThis year the procession will include: the cannon carriage, decorated rath, ornamented horses and camels. A number of bands will also accompany the procession.  The sawari of the Gangaur will be almost at the end followed by Dhalet Chobdar, women in traditional dress with Kalash and mounted police on horse.

Jaipur Gets a Fresh Dose of Men’s Fashion with Karnpratap Couture

A new Fashion Store

Men of Jaipur have a reason to rejoice as Jaipur gets a high end fashion store dedicated completely to men. Now that something so amazing is happening on the fashion front in the city, Jaipur Beat decided to review the store for its readers. This one of a kind, small yet fashionably extensive store has a lot more to offer to men then meets the eye. Whether you need to look dapper for a formal event or want to create a statement at your friend’s wedding, this is the place that will fulfill all your clothing needs.

The Designer

The moment we entered the store, the colorful, quirky and stylish Nehru jackets caught our attention. Karn Pratap Khunteta the man behind the label, acknowledged that these jackets are their forte. A jeweler by profession, Karnpratap, never knew that his impeccable fashion style will one day lead him to a career in fashion. For him designing happened when a few of his friends asked him to design for them and the rest is history.

The Jaipur Connection

In words of the designer,“You can take me out of Jaipur but you cannot take Jaipur out of me” and that is precisely the reason why he launched his first store in the pink city. He was born and brought up in Jaipur and he thinks that this is the place that best defines him. His designs may have been inspired by his travels across the country but they do exude the charm of the Pink City. The designer has a thing for colors and you can tell that by the beautiful use of colors in his design and that’s what knowingly or unknowingly makes them Jaipuri. Among other things from the city the designer is inspired by the beautiful turbans of Rajasthani men, Achkans (coats) and the beautiful Dupatta in women’s wear.

The designer definitely has his style and fashion sense in place. But, apart from a man’s fashion sense what could be more charming, well his ethical sense. The designer believes in the current trend of Glocalization, which means to produce locally and sell globally. He also believes in giving the artisans their fair share. Looks like, ethics and fashion do go hand in hand.

Fashion Advice to Men of Jaipur

To Jaipur men his only fashion advice is to come out of their comfort zone. They have tried a lot of solid patterns, which definitely have their own charm but it’s time that they experiment. It’s time that they start adorning attires that have beautiful colors and some quirky prints. To make these experimental designs look good on you, you can definitely leave it all to this new designer in the city.

P.S. – While you plan out a visit to this store do not forget to check out the vibrant, peppy and colorful jutis that the designer has in store for the men.

Now go and check out the latest designs in Men’s fashion.

Jaipur’s Leading Jewellery House Birdhichand Stuns the Runway at Amazon India Fashion Week 2017

When we say that Jaipur is making it big on the Indian fashion scene, we mean it. One of the most famous fashion weeks of India, the Amazon India fashion week, started recently in Delhi and guess who showcased their collection on the opening day. It was none other than the famous Birdhichand Ghanshyamdas Jewellers from Jaipur. Amazon India Fashion Week takes place every year and many leading design houses and designers participate in the event. The latest trends of the season are displayed at the event. Given such a huge platform, it is definitely a matter of pride that Birdhichand Ghanshyamdas Jewellers participated in the opening day show of the event.blogIn a special event created by Vogue India, titled ‘Sari 24/7’, drapes by 60 leading designers were showcased on the runway. All these designs were adorned with an eclectic union of Indian handloom & fusion jewellery by Birdhichand Ghanshyamdas Jewellers. The stage was beautifully embellished with white balloons that added a subtle charm to the show.

blog2blog 1The Jaipur based jewellery brand added a royal touch to the chosen Sari ensemble with its bold and intrepid collection. An array of beautiful and traditional chokers, rani haars, dangling earrings, majestic Mathapatti, brazen bracelets/kadas, delicate anklets, big rings added bling to the models who walked the stage adorning beautiful drapes. The meticulously designed pieces studded with precious & semi-precious stones and encrusted with pearls, ghungroos, and vintage coins exuded élan offering a regal touch to the pastel silhouettes.blog4

blog3Many famous designers also presented their collection during the event. Another moment of pride for Jaipur happened when Rajesh Pratap Singh, a designer from Jaipur (now based in Delhi) showcased his collection in an event supported by the Good Earth. The participating designers in this event presented their collections that were created from the textiles woven by the students of Handloom school in order to support the handloom industry.rpsThis is not the first time that designers from Jaipur have showcased their collection at such a prestigious platform. And we can safely say that definitely it’s  not the last. We are sure that much more is about to come.

Jaipur Adda-A New adda to hang out in town !

Beer, Jar Potatoes and Karari Roti

One thing is sure that Jaipur no longer gives you monotonous fine dining set ups.  With the mushroom growth of cafes in town, mark it with any new café  you will get ample choice to experiment with food and ambience both.  And, we at Jaipur Beat can never miss to introduce any such interesting place coming up in town. Here’s bringing to you our first hand experience of one such amazing place- ‘Jaipur adda’.

Have you ever wondered what Jaipur looked like from the terrace of a building at night? Where you could actually experience a little wind in your hair while oodles of mouth-watering food being served on your plate? Where you can actually have Khana Pina over some Gup Shup with friends?

The answer to all these questions lies in ‘Jaipur Adda’ that is perched on the top of the Nirvana Hometel Hotel at a busy juncture of Khasa Kothi Circle. The place is arranged over two floors (upper and lower deck) offering a spectacular terrace seating overlooking Country Inn Hotel and Suites and the Jaipur metro track.

Front view from inside Jaipur Adda Cafe

Nicely dated décor with cheery setting of the fine wood furnishings and the amazing wall art give the space a quirky feel,  hence set this place apart from the usual cafés.

About Ambience-Indoor and Outdoor

The café promises a fabulous experience and the overall calm ambiance radiates positive vibes where you can simply get your drink and watch the sun going down the skyline and the sunrays actually peeping through the bamboo chick curtains.

Not just that, one can even take a roller coaster ride on time machine from Jaipur Adda, as your senses are soaked on one side experiencing the ecstasy of the moving metro and the busy roads of today’s modern Jaipur while on the contrary witness the magnificent Nahargarh Fort which is the reminiscence of the Jaipur’s royal times.

Not just its romantic ambience, the food here is equally good  in quality and price both.

About Food-Serves both veg and non veg!

If you are going with friends we suggest you to go for Beer Bucket. A big wooden barrel filled with plenty of ice is placed right next  to you and delectable Jar potatoes (roasted baby potatoes tossed in harissa sauce which is a spicy paste made out of hot chilli peppers and other spices) was just perfect to go with the spicy conversation among friends.

Beer Bucket served with Karari Roti at Jaipur Adda

Out of the elaborate menu of Food and Drinks, we tried Tub of shots– some times be crazy and it’s real good fun to say cheers with shots of colors and sparkling lights.

We were keen on experimenting with something innovative. So we tried –Smacked cucumber, Sichuan peppercorn, garlic salad. A crispy snack is always welcome, on Chef’s recommendation we had ‘Karari Roti’- crispy large kadahi shaped roti sprinkled with olive oil and topped with chopped tomato onion. Other delights were the Bombay toast, Fried egg parsi influenced and also Zucchini, pineapple, carrot, raddish slaw red honey mustard, no doubt all the preparations surprised us.

Diary of An Elephant – Who Misses The Holi Festival

I look gigantic, strong and majestic. When I walk down the streets of my city, or carry a bunch of these tiny little humans on my back, I can see a sense of excitement in every pedestrian’s eyes. When I slowly pass through the busy roads of walled city, with the towering Hawamahal on my left, I see locals and tourists pointing their smart phones at me and clicking pictures after pictures.

You will see me everywhere in pink city- during the long walks to and fro Amber Fort, royal wedding processions wouldn’t move without me, I have been riding the princes for ages now, and not just this, you will see my deities and structures in all the significant places viz. temples, forts, monuments etc. Every year midst all the weddings, processions, tours & long walks in scorching summers, there used to be one day when I wasn’t  vehicle, one day when people would turn their heads away from the colossal forts and palaces, when their eyes were not fixated on their beloved, the one day when all the eyes were gazing at one person – me.

Queen Elizabeth with Maharaja of Jaipur took an Elephant Ride in the year 1960

Just like you look at a dull sky every day, but admire its true beauty when it is suddenly splashed by the seven colors of rainbow, my monochromatic grey body was suddenly bedecked and wrapped in beautiful colors. That day was the Elephant festival.

As I walked inside the vast stadium of my city, I felt like a queen walking royally with a beautiful curvy body, the musical sound of my tinkling anklets alerting everyone, and a silver elegant cloth with red border covering my saddle. My pristine white tusks are covered with bracelets and rings, my head embellished with heavy jewellery and I think all the other ladies were looking at me for inspiration and men for obvious reasons. One moment I felt like a model in a beauty contest and in another, like a bride walking down the aisle. I closed my eyes and the flashback began.

The process of painting our bodies with all kinds of colors in the world began almost a month before Holi. My guardian (Mahaut) would wake me up, clean me and I could see a different kind of twinkle in his eyes. I would look around and see my fellow friends being cleaned and bathed like it was the first day to school after a long summer vacation. The next moment, some new men started to paint me in vivid colours. This went on for days and days and then came our D-day. The one where I was both excited and nervous.

I opened my eyes to the reality, to the hugeness of the Chaugan stadium, and later at Ram Bagh Polo Ground and saw a little human sitting on another elephant throwing a fist full of colour at me. It did not stop here. We went around playing various games such as running; pulling, tugging and I also won a pageant that day. I felt important, celebrated, and completely oblivious to the fact, that this will be my last time here.

My mahaut still wakes me up, bathes me, cleans me occasionally and dresses my saddle with the regular red cloth. But I still miss that special day, when I would meet my friends, the brown camels and black horses, watch the humans laughing, playing and running, and when I felt like one of the most beautiful animals in the world, on the joyous festival of Holi.

Facts –

  • Elephants, that symbolize royalty according to the traditions of Rajasthan, had been a part of the world famous Holi Festival organised by Rajasthan Tourism Dept. that took place in Jaipur since ages.
  • Elephants, along with horses, camels, were painted in vivid colors and bedecked with heavy jewellery to make them look stunning. This festival attracted thousands of locals and tourists and Rajasthan tourism experienced a major boost during Holi.
  • In 2013, the Elephant Festival was officially discontinued the Dept of Tourism, Govt of Rajasthan and replaced by the ‘Holi Festival’ which did not include Elephants.
  • Copy of an official letter putting an end to our very own ‘Elephant Festival’

It was all about Smiles, Makeovers & NGO Kids at F-Salon, Jaipur.

All children are god’s little angels irrespective of caste, color, creed and are blessed with the ability to bring joy all around them. F-Salon, as we all know, is an ultra-glamorous, cutting edge hair & makeup salon with its teams of experts. So what is the connection between the two? A wonderful initiative called ‘Foster Smiles’ by F-Salon in collaboration with Jaipur-based NGO, Naya Sawera to bring a little bit of magic in the lives of specially challenged & underprivileged kids by giving them ultra-cool makeovers.

While the right to education, healthy food, safe shelter and the basics still remains a tremendously important concern for these that this NGO is continuously working hard to provide, one had to see what on its onset seemed like ‘just ‘a fun idea for the children quickly transformed into an empowering one. We often forget, of all the things we can give these children, the ability to hope, believe and dream is unmatched & priceless.

1 (3)

As we walked into the salon, we found a bunch of shy, well-behaved kids quietly sipping their juice packets, huddled together looking a little perplexed with the glass façade, shiny lights & people all around them. One child wondered about too much electricity, the other about the tall buildings and the third was just glad to have had an off day from school. With owners Dushyant and Praanjal instantly connecting and cracking jokes with the kids, soon all we could hear was laughter and excitement.

2 (2)

At ease now, the kids loved sitting in front of the large luxurious mirrors at the F-Salon all set for their makeover. They all gingerly marched to the hair washing stations and were given a head wash all set for their new stylish haircuts. You would think these kids would be clueless about style but they all had their list of preferences and famous movie stars etched in their heads & hearts.

3 (1)

With curling, crimping, razor cuts, highlights, nail art, grooming sessions and blow-dryers blowing away at the salon, the kids were in the some of the best hands in the industry. The whole place was packed with heavy action.

4 (1)

One of the defining moments of the entire event was seeing how with every snip of the scissor, the kids transformed. From being shy to happy and then confident. In a matter of minutes, one could see the change which was though only in the outer appearance but managed to bring out the light of confidence from somewhere deep within these kids. It was as if they shed an outer layer of shyness, with bright shiny eyes and a smile on their faces courtesy the experts at F-salon, they looked super confident of themselves, their tomorrow and a quiet belief in their own power.

In the end, who gave back whom became blurred but every face in the room be it the children, the staff at the F-Salon and others were beaming with happiness and large generous smiles. More power to you kids, we say.

Way to go F –salon! What an incredible initiative indeed.
