10 Places in Walled City of Jaipur To Refresh Yourself with ‘Thanda’

The Jaipur city, as we know, houses an enormous amount of food joints. However there are certain food joints, which are not only the best when it comes to getting some relief in this scorching heat, but they also have a special place in our hearts as we have many memories attached to these places. Yes, we are talking about the age old ice cream parlours and famous kulfi shops in the walled city that have always been our go to place in summers ! Majority of these shops are decades old and are famous because they have been serving the same taste since years. They are known for literally serving happiness and smiles to people of all ages on sticks in terms of Kulfi – the traditional Indian ice cream and also adding a refreshing dose of juices, shakes and sharbats in our lives in the summer. So here is a list of ‘Thanda’ in Walled City, which you must visit as soon as you finish reading this.

1.) Guddu ice cream parlour

This shop on the corner of the street has been serving Jaipurites for four decades now. Even if you go here in the winter months the number of customers will be the same at the original ice cream parlour of the city.

Venue: Shop 88A, near Ajmeri gate, Nehru bazaar, Yadgar gali, MI road

2.) Gulnar

Before all these juice bars opened up in Jaipur this small shop in the heart of the walled city was the first where the people of Jaipur would go for refreshing juices. The shop has 4 more outlets sprawled in different areas. But the real magic is sitting in this small little shop in Kishanpole bazaar and sipping fresh juices which will definitely revitalize your long summer days.

Venue: Shop no 278, Kishanpole bazaarIMG_4561IMG_45443.) Kake ki dukan

This was the actual hangout place for all the young people in the walled city before restaurants and cafes took over. They serve mouth watering “hing ki kachori” which is definitely spicy. To balance out the spicie, the cooling milk rose is the perfect complement here.

Venue: Nehru bazaarIMG_4816IMG_48114.) Lassiwala

There are 2-3 Lassiwalas on MI road itself, but this is the original lassiwala which was established in 1944. Even though one glass of this lassi is quite filling you will be asking for more of this sweet curd based drink. Famous among tourists as well you will never find this shop empty.

Venue: Shop no.312, MI roadIMG_4937IMG_4955

5.) Mahaveer rabri bhandar

One of the oldest places in Jaipur this rabri bhandar is famous not only for its rabri but also for a range of other sweets. You can also skip your dinner and also try the aloo pyaaz ki sabzi with bejad ki roti here.

Venue: Near Goaplpura puliya, opposite HP petrol pump, Tonk road.IMG_4978IMG_49796.) New Dilbahar sharbat

Established in 1949, this shop in Choti Chaupar serves a variety of sharbats along with Rajasthani staple snacks like kachori and mirchi vada.  It might have been through a little rough patch because of the construction of metro but it does not affect the taste of the sharbats here.

Venue: 379, Choti ChauparIMG_4725

IMG_47227.) Original Ramchandra kulfi bhandar

This shop has been bringing smile on the faces of Jaipurites for 17 years now. The kesar pista kulfi here is probably the best you can find in the city. To comply with the growing demands of different shakes, they have updated their menu and now are also serving oreo shake. Go on an empty stomach here because the list of things that you should try here is long, including the faluda and papaya shake.

Venue: 222, Badi Chaupadh, near Hawa Mahal, Tripoliya bazaarIMG_4710IMG_4715IMG_46408.) Pandit kulfi

Even though this shop is now nearly 40 years old they are trying to improvise traditional flavors.  Pandit kulfi is the perfect example of an old place attempting out new things with kulfi flavours like paan and mango.

Venue: 110-111, Hawa Mahal roadIMG_4609IMG_4617IMG_46049.) Panna lal kulfi wale

This little green colored shop is famous for its matka kulfi and varieties of rabri. What will definitely catch your attention here is the eccentric names of dishes like “shahi rabri” and “baadshahi rabri”!

Venue: 1242, Gopal Ji ka rasta, Johri bazaarIMG_4983IMG_4999IMG_447210.) Ramchandra kulfi bhandhar

Another Ramchandra kulfi bhandhar on the list, this one is a kiosk near Ajmeri gate. The small size of this place doesn’t compromise at all with the quality and taste of the kulfis served here. If you stay far from the walled city you can also take dabas of this famous kulfi home and return them later. 🙂

Venue: Ajmer RoadIMG_4571IMG_4588

Now that you have the list, get ready to go and enjoy some amazing summer delicacies. 🙂

Purohit Ji ka Katla – Jaipur’s Wholesale hub for Wedding Shopping

The Wedding season is right upon us and we know you can’t wait to shop! Although Jaipur has become a big name when it comes to wedding shopping destination with the growth of major fashion brands, retail chains and amazing concept stores in the city. But there’s one place that still holds a magnetic charm for all the good things it offers to the shoppers- Purohitji Ka Katla! .

Okay, if we can ignore its suffocating entry points, Purohit Ji Ka Katla, by far is one of the most wonderful shopping destinations for the wedding shoppers in the Pink City!

Though, the most complicated market space in the city, Purohit Ji Ka Katla after so many years, still holds its traditional market charm, which can be seen in the passion with which each local steps inside the lanes and makes their way through the pouring crowd.  Majority of the buyers seen here are the locals and rural people from nearby areas of Jaipur, as tourists could never really reach THIS market of the walled city. A wholesale market hidden within the Johri Bazaar is the shopping hub for cheapest goods, hence the people from villages nearby come here to shop products in bulk.

Intrigued by the glitz and glitter of wedding fabrics, dresses and sherwanis hanging on the entrance of the market, out team at Jaipur beat decided to give this Katla a shot. So we are here with our first hand experience of ‘Purohit Ji ka Katla’

Let us take you to the back story of the ‘Katla’ as it is fondly called by the locals. Even though this market is decades old but we are good at digging roots and found out that  this particular area was actually a place to keep the horses and carriages belonging to the royal family, sounds interesting! Oh yes, as we moved further we noticed it to be a huge compound, very spacious to manage the horses. Each shop has steps that lead to a room, which was the place where the horses were kept. Now the shopkeepers use it as a store to keep goods. Some of these rooms were surprisingly  bigger than the shops.

In spite of the old world traditional practices, we observed best of the both worlds (modern and traditional) in Katla. If you are tired of sitting in the old traditional shops with “gaddas” and about to have a heat stroke you can quickly move to the fancy upmarket fully air-conditioned shops within the Katla.  All these shops are run by families who have been involved in the same business for generations. It’s heart warming to see the “peedhiyas” keeping the traditions intact and showing family traditions of business run by generations after generation with same zeal and enthusiasm.

The market houses some of the most traditional shops of the city. There are cozy, beautiful lanes that are amazingly organized in geometrical shapes with everything from fabrics, raw materials, accessories, jewellery, nick knacks to utensils, toys, stationery, party suppliers, decorations, plastic stuff and house hold items to offer. Interestingly, the market also has makeshift shops, which are seasonal according to the festivals. As Raksha Bandhan is the closest festival right? Hence these shops change their products and stock doris, loomis and rakhis.

This is the hub for wedding shopping in the city and the beautiful saree shops attract one’s eyes!  These are manufactured in nearby villages and further sold to retailer shopkeepers and customers. Most of the material found here is brocade, cotton, while Lehariya and bandhej dominate the market. The Sarees and lehangas sold here are also imported from Kolkata  for its handwork and Surat for machine work.

This is this beautiful shop of Gopal Lal Radharam Safewala which is one of the many shops from where you can rent sherwani’s starting at the price of 2000 and going on till 25,000. A mirage of multicolored safas , torans, varmala are few of the hundreds of wedding things you can find in Purohit Ji ka katla. Ramsahay Banshidhar is a shop specializing in tassels used in dresses and items used for Baraat Swagat in weddings.

The most number of customers visit Katla during festive season and in month before the wedding time which is locally termed as  ‘Saawah’. Since the prices of the all the things are very low you would not even feel like bargaining. The special wedding mala for grooms caught our attention which is designed and decked up with currency notes and it is only found in Purohit Ji ka Katla.

Mukesh tailor is one of the oldest tailors in the market. Currently the fourth generation of the family is involved in stitching of poshaks for all the main temples in the city like the Govind Dev ji temple. The shop is very small but has been the workplace for this family for the past 50 years.

M.B Dresses which is also a 60 year old shop is involved in retail of different kinds of materials. Their customers include boutiques and event management companies of Jaipur. Major high end boutiques of the city shop for raw material like borders, boutis and latkans from katla. These materials which are made by hand are also exported to various parts of the country. You will get to see a lot of Gotta Patti work in these shops.

The shop owners in the katla are endearingly called Sethjis and they claim to be coming to their shop on a regular basis for more than 30 years.

Purohit Ji Ka Katla is an experience altogether! There are innumerable shops to see and you need atleast 2-3 hours to explore this market. The market opens at 11.00- 11:30 am and you can shop till 8-8:30 pm except Sundays .

So if you are planning to  pay a visit to the Purohit Ji ka Katla then here’s Jaipur Beat’s quick tip for you- Stay hydrated 😀  However, once you enter the lanes the weather wouldn’t even matter as it’s much cooler inside with the riot of colours. Warning for claustrophobic  It will be very crowded but it’s definitely worth a visit.

As there are a lot of entrances to the market, but the best way is to go towards Badi Chaupad from Johari Bazaar and ask the passers by to guide you till the entrance 😉

Pick up your tote, a water bottle and drive down to Purohit Ji Ka Katla to witness the real charm of the market as the best time to visit this place is now 😀

Gharaz- A Contemporary Jewelry Brand From Jaipur Turns 3

With various markets like Johari bazaar, Haldion ka raasta and many other markets which are solely dedicated to jewelry. It’s not uncommon for another brand to open up in Jaipur. The pink city tops the lists of wedding shopping destinations in the country and the jewelry shops in the city have majorly contributed to that. Be it gold, silver, lac, thewa, meenakari and kundan the options and varieties are innumerable and this is another reason why the name Jaipur is synonymous with jewelry shopping in the whole world.

Among many small shops and big stores Gharaz is a brand started by Vishakha Agarwal who comes from a family involved in the jewelry trade and is the fourth generation of her family in this industry.

The budding young designer hosted an event called “GHARAZ TURNS 3” at cafe Lazy Mojo to celebrate the successful completion of 3 years of her brand which was started in 2014.

JAIPUR BEAT attended the event and got a chance to see her exquisite collection of contemporary and modern jewelry which has a touch of tradition. Her work involves a fusion of different styles which was clearly visible in her jewelry and jewelry customization as per choice of the client. The event was co-hosted by her sister Akshya Agarwal who handles her own home decor brand called the Bhrti home decor and is also the director of Avyaya Welfare Foundation, an NGO promoting skill based development. The fashion aspect was introduced by Nidhi Agarwal, their youngest sister. The sister trio is very creative and wishes to show the culture and rich heritage of Jaipur in all their respective fields. the event was also attended by Mrs. Archana Surana, director of ARCH Academy, who appreciated the work of Vishakha who is the alumnus of ARCH academy.

Vishakha’s pieces are simple, classy, elegant and cost effective. She uses nickel free gold plating as it has a longer life and does not cause skin allergies. Other than diamond, silver she also uses semi precious jewels with mostly pastel shades for her designs as they can be worn on an everyday basis and  for parties and weddings and also adds a cool, casual vibe to any look.

What stands out in her collection is that all the pieces are very light weight contrary to the appearance that they give. The neck pieces look heavy but once after trying those on you won’t feel the weight. The jewelry is designed keeping in mind the modern women and as an addition to the personality of the person wearing it. The most unique designs are the ones which are made up of vintage coins with inscription on them. “Rather than buying something for a special occasion which you won’t wear again, it’s better to invest in pieces which you can wear in your office, for a party and even in weddings”, quoted Vishakha, designer of Gharaz.

Her collections are handcrafted by local Jaipur artisans and involve a lot of traditional carving on jewelry. Her upcoming collections will involve the use of wood and brass.

The label has bought in a new aspect to jewelry shopping in the city with online store which provides shipping all across the world.  The designer is working very hard to complement traditional jewelry from Jaipur with her own brand which stands to create modern looks for women of every age. She wishes to change the image of Jaipur jewelry from traditional to modern with a touch of elegance. She is also creating a balance and incorporates the rich culture of Rajasthan in her modern pieces. Her collection is also available at around 30 different online portals.

She has a retail store along with her sister who is working in home decor at 72, Vishnu garden colony, opp. Airport boundary main Tonk road, Jaipur. You can also shop from their website which is and respectively and their Instagram handles which are @gharazbyvishakha and @bhrtihomedecor.

These young Jaipurites are working to create a different shopping experience in the fields of jewelry and home decor for everyone in the city and also in other parts of the country.
