This Sawan Season Embark Into a World of Colourful Lehriya

Sawan or Shravan, the holiest month of Hindu calendar is at its inception. Showers of rain comes with the vibrancy of festivities, colours of Lehriya, flavors of sweets and blessing of the ruling Lord Shiva. There is an aura of absolute piousness filled with a sight of religious processions, men and women dipped in the devotional activities.

Sawan, in Rajasthan, is not only a celebratory month but a month which experiences everything draped in the exalting waves of Lehriya.

Lehriya, meaning a ‘Leher’, a wave. In ancient times the wave embodies a craft which brings hope to the arid state of Rajasthan.  Lehriya is like an heirloom, which is our rich heritage, and people adorning themselves in those impeccable waves presents a cultural and spiritual image of Rajasthan. During this season, you could witness Lehriya in all forms ranging from suits, sarees, scarfs, safas, bangles, puppets and whatnot. When in Jaipur you could grab yourself a Lehriya print attire and flaunt yourself clothed in the culture of Jaipur. Listed below are fascinating items in Lehriya:

The tie and dye technique of printing wave on cotton sarees is the only freshness one needs during the humid weather. The plain Lehriya is everyday wear which makes you look vibrant in any season of the year, but women during the festival of Teej or season of Sawan prefer to wear Samudra Rajashahi Leheriya as different colors denote different festivals and meanings.

Safas, Pagdis has been a vital part of our Indian culture and heritage. Men with colourful lehriya safas give a royal visual to anyone who sees them. Despite Safa’s everyday usage, men perceive it as a mark of honour and respect. In Jaipur, you could witness men in such mesmerizing prints which will entice you to grab one safa at least.

Embrace the auspicious month of Sawan with the vivacious hues of Lehriya dupattas and sway like a diva. This season offers an excuse to look elegant every day and flaunt the gorgeous side of yours by swathing yourself in the vibrantly designed lehriya scarfs and rule the streets like a queen.

Lehriya’s richness is a synthesis of fine craft and an elongated process. Plain lehriya is classic but, many people during the festive month desire some additional work. To cater to this need, you can explore the markets of Jaipur and find a wide range of Lehriya suits inclusive of kalamkaari, chalk line, gota patti, sequin, and mirror work.

Sawan and Lehriya are a deadly and admired combination among the Jaipurites as well as the tourists that you will see Lehriya all around the Pink City. You can buy the prints on puppets, bangles and any other traditional item.
