Winter Is Coming!

Hello Fellas! Good is finally happening to us – the winters are almost here (sigh) and we’re finally going to get a break from the heat, even though it has not exactly been as terrible as before. There are lots of reasons to look forward to this season’s winter like school holidays, timely leaves from office, cosy nights but here’s a list of the most important things that we believe everyone gets excited about the most:

  1. Silk

Yes, yes, yes! We finally get to adorn silk sarees and shirts without drenching in our sweat and especially now, considering that the wedding season has just begun – it is the perfect time to flaunt, lads.

silk expo

Time to say bye-bye cotton!

  1. Gajar ka Halwa

The Ma-ke-haath-ka Gajar ka Halwa is heaven. The beautiful amalgamation of milk, sugar, delicious carrots topped with crunchy almonds is the best thing god ever invented.

JB - Halwa

Drooling already? Same.

  1. Sunbathing

Okay, we know we said we need a break from the heat – but the feeling of sitting under the winter sun is totally different. Sitting on your terrace in the afternoon, eating guava or radish and just absorbing the rays is so so so satisfying.

IMG20191110154431.jpg

  1. Peanuts

Eating roasted peanuts with family is a childhood memory that can only be re-lived during this time of the year, when hundreds of vendors are going to come down the street to sell peanuts. 90s kids would understand the nostalgic feeling of their father getting peanuts wrapped in newspaper, only to eat with Gud.

IMG_3343.jpg

  1. Eggs

While eggs are super-duper tasty, they are extremely beneficial during low temperatures. They contain vitamin D which is essential for the body especially because the sun rays are weak.

So, no need to come up with bahanas to eat eggs now! 😜

  1. Coconut Oil

Damaged hair knows the real pain here –  thankfully we can apply coconut oil now & condition our hair, and skin (yay). Plus, who doesn’t always cherish a good warm oil massage? 😉

  1. Festivals

This time of the year, many festivals like Jaipur Literature Festival, Jaipur Jewellery Show and obviously the on-going Pushkar Fair, to name a few, begin. There’s madness, fun and celebration of culture, food and knowledge which is extremely exciting.

  1. Weddings

Gathering with your friends and family after a long time and having a good time is what we all wait for. A wedding in India is filled with lots of emotions – where you celebrate, cry, laugh, probably feel lonely (😂) because you’re still unmarried (just kidding!) and feel blessed. There’s truly nothing like it!

IMG_8337.jpg

  1. Boots

Wearing boots and feeling like you own the world is another thing about winters – the only thing disappointing is that you wished it snowed and you got to wear boots often. All the fashion prodigies would agree, eh?

Looks like we’ve covered the list!

But let us know your favourite part about winters, that you think we’ve missed, in the comment section below! 😁

Pushkar Fair has a lot more to offer than just camel fair

The greatly awaited Pushkar Fair is right upon us, scheduled to begin on 4th November and will culminate till 12th November on the day of Hindu festival Kartik Purnima. There’s nothing like Pushkar Camel Fair. It’s a celebration of the uniqueness of Rajasthan and experiencing the festival is the dream of every traveler. This is the time when Pushkar comes truly alive with multiple hues.

pushkar sunrise

The small sleepy town comes out of its hibernation mode and becomes the playground of people from the world over. The history of Pushkar Fair is a hundred years old but the festival keeps not only that historic spirit alive but also has new age elements to it now.

Primarily, thousands of pilgrims and cattle merchants flock the town for holy rituals or the trade of cattle and livestock. But, that’s not all; Pushkar fair has a lot to offer to the travellers who are neither pilgrims nor traders. Buzzing markets, fascinating ghats and activity grounds are enough to catch the fancy of travellers and photographers.

pushkar-1

Sunrise and Sunset: The vibes and the views of Pushkar switch within every hour right from the dawn to dusk, added to that the starry sky above ignited Pushkar Lake gives a heavenly chill in nerves. During early mornings and evenings, when the dust mixes with golden light falling from the sun it’s an absolute delight to watch the camels and the camel traders in the Mela ground. You not only get to see the heard of camels but also get a glimpse into the life of a rural Rajasthan, where the traders heat up the chullahs (a kind of stove used for cooking the food ) and prepare their food with minimum ingredients. Thousands of people from the world across come to capture only this spectacle.

Markets: The narrow streets and lanes of the town have hidden within themselves a whole world of intrigue; from the local artifacts and handicrafts to funky apparels and chunky jewellery, Pushkar’s cozy markets are the treasure trove for a shopping enthusiast.

Ghats: The Ghats in the holy land of Brahma are said to be nothing less than those of Varanasi. Roaming around the ghats with a soothing sound of hymns and bells renders tranquility to the visitors. While the night scene becomes even more fascinating when evening aarti is performed on these Ghats. Illuminated with multitude of lights the Ghats and lake take the spectators into a world of solace and peace.

Food: Pushkar is also one heaven for foodies. From street stalls to roadside cafes, wide range of cuisines waits for food lovers to visit and enjoy sumptuous cuisine of Pushkar. Special Masala chai in Kulhad, Authentic Italian pizza, unique Poha Dal Pakwaan and Ugma ji ki kachori are a few to dishes to tantalize your taste buds. However, as you walk down the streets of Pushkar amidst the aroma of freshly made baatis, puris and kachoris being fried right on the street, the whiff of gulkand and the sight of tempting malpuas dipped in sugar syrup will call out only one thing- pure bliss.

Adventure and Activities: Apart from the buying and selling of livestock, the fair has become an important tourist attraction. Competitions such as the ‘matka phod’, ‘longest moustache’ and ‘bridal competition’ are the main draws for this fair, which attracts thousands of tourists. In recent years, the fair has also included an exhibition cricket match between the local Pushkar Club and a team of foreign tourists. Pushkar Camel Fair has so many events and activities like camel cart ride, horse riding, bullock cart ride and giant wheel that your day will be full but we advise you to take out a little time to stroll in the narrow lanes of the town.

This Diwali, Let’s Keep Our Culture Alive!

Preserved and passed on for generations, the elixir of living the life and the footprints of our ancestors, the culture, the traditions and the zeal of life. Diwali is not just about a festival in our country. It is more about heritage, and its preservation.

On Diwali we celebrate the return of Ram from 14 years of exile, and growing up, Diwali was all about lighting up diyas, cooking sweet Indian delicacies, sparking fire crackers, and worshipping Lord Ganesha and goddess Laxmi. With the change in time and tradition, we are losing the grip on soul of this festival. Here are a few things we all need to turn back to this Diwali!

  1. The Elaborate Diwali Pooja- The elaborate Diwali pooja always used to be a family affair but now it is also losing its value to us. The conventional ways of celebrating Diwali started by pooja are changing with most of the youngsters migrating to different cities for education and job. We should learn to pray on our own if we cannot reach home on Diwali. 🙂

puja2

  1. Sweets– Where there is celebration, there has to be sweets, but nowadays we are turning towards chocolates and other dessert options that are known to be #gluttonfree #cholesterolfree #fatfree and whatnot. We are forgetting that the delicious recipes of homemade sweets like laddus, gulabjamun, barfi, halwa, mathri, etc. that have been handed down to us by our nani and dadi are much healthier and delightful in every sense.

doodh-ka-ladu.jpg

  1. New Clothes- The zeal of the festival Diwali needs to be kept alive with new clothes, because Diwali also marks a new beginning, the end of evil and the victory of the good. We promise you that you are going to have a worthy stock of pictures for Instagram with a new ethnic attire.

ethnic wear_1.jpg

  1. Cleaning our homes- Scientifically, it is a good idea to clean your house around mid-October and mid-November because after the monsoon, cleaning makes sure all the germs and infectants are eradicated from the house.

diwal decorations

Although, religiously it is believed that goddess Laxmi visits the homes of devotees on the night of Diwali to bless them with happiness, luck and prosperity for the rest of the year. Therefore, we illuminate and decorate our houses with diyas, lights and rangoli.

diwali-decorations.jpg

  1. Firecrackers- Burning of firecrackers also carries a scientific logic behind itself apart from the celebration. The heat produced in the environment due to burning of the crackers makes sure that all the disease causing microbes are removed from the environment after the end of monsoon. But the perpetually increasing pollution restricts us from doing so, and we can opt for lighting mustard oil diyas for the same effect.

jb-crackers-2.jpg

So this Diwali, let’s make a promise that we are not going to feel guilty about having an extra gulab jamun, or bursting the fire crackers, that we are not going to wear that old comfortable jeans, rather try a slightly uncomfortable but new dress; that we are going to make sure our houses are spick and span before Diwali. Let’s make a promise to preserve the enriched culture handed down to us by our ancestors.

Happy Diwali!
