Will Jaipur Ever Be Free Of Open Defecation ?

IMG_6078

Mohan wakes up every morning before the roosters start crowing and goes to the spot where they meet daily. He starts flashing lights as a sign of calling everyone and after everyone’s attendance is marked, they start walking. They need to hurry up and get done with this before dawn.

Before the day breaks completely, people across Jaipur and other parts of India start with their daily missions. They carry lotas and continue to perform the ritual of defecating openly. This is the time when they talk about lives but never question their routine or reality. Defecating in open does not only mean polluting the environment, but is one of the easiest ways of getting infected.

According to Swachhta Status Report in 2015, more than half of the population i.e., 52.1 % of the country still defecates in open. However since 2014, the BJP government has managed to create 3, 37,679 individual toilets and 1, 28,946 community or public toilets. Rajasthan itself has witnessed establishment of 86,895 individual toilets and 3558 public toilets. Out of this, our pink city, Jaipur, still stands at 29th position among the other states in terms of cleanliness. It scares to visualize the condition prior to these developments.

IMG_0299

Even though, the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan aims to end the health and sanitation problems by 2nd October 2019, there’s another significant issue that needs to be addressed on an urgent basis. Jaipur has numerous ‘open toilets’ situated on the main roads which serve as a platform for men (as for a women to defecate in front of everyone isn’t morally correct as per the society norms). There are all sorts of disposals near these areas which add to the smell of toilets.

The problem lies within people as well. Despite public buildings and few public toilets, people tend to urinate openly. It’s like when you know Ram Rahim is a rapist but your religious beliefs are too strong to let you use your conscience. Even though people are aware of the availability of certain number of washrooms, they prefer to avoid using one. This includes literate community as well. There are specific members of our society (most being men) that do not hesitate in performing the sin despite their knowledge and awareness. The society has been taking the issue very lightly and hasn’t been realizing the vicious circle of uncleanliness surroundings and crimes this menace has generated. It has been there since ages. Now is the hour to take actions as we cannot afford another Sushila or Sushma to fear getting raped or photographed without clothes on, early in the morning.

We surely need education, rigid rules and self-consciousness. Furthermore, rather than blaming people and being a pessimist, individuals should stop others performing such deeds as its high time the city needs change.

Let’s not confuse ourselves; every one of us has to raise voice against it so that the battle can be won.

The New Age Bio-Degradable Plastic for Swacch Bharat

Swacch Bharat, a campaign whose tune wakes us all up early every morning, isn’t new to anyone. However, even after listening to it daily it still hasn’t registered with us. Every single household to this date uses products that are harmful for the environment. One of the most harmful products for our environment and yet most regularly used in every Indian household is: Plastic.

If you don’t believe us then please walk up to your kitchen, can you now see a bag hanging behind the door carrying more of its like inside it? Yes, this is plastic. How many of you actually know that plastic or ‘polythenes’ as usually referred to take 500 years to decompose in a landfill. Given the number of these poly-bags in each household, we can say that we do not need anything else to destroy our environment.plastic.jpgIf we roam around in the residential areas of Jaipur, we will easily find one corner of every street filled with garbage packed in polythenes. As per the reports on usage of plastic, the world’s consumption of plastic bags has been on a rapid increase with around 25 million tons of plastic getting accumulated in the environment. On an average a plastic bag is used for hardly 20 mins but stays in the environment for hundreds of years. In our country alone the per capita consumption of plastic is 5kg annually. Every 5 years the consumption is getting doubled.IMG_5071Given such a grave situation wouldn’t it be better that we move away from such harmful items and look for alternatives. Recently Jaipur Beat came got a chance to learn about Biodegradable bags developed by Biotec Bags. Luckily they are a convenient alternative to using plastic and are 100% degradable. Biodegradable plastics are made up with polythene mixed with an enzyme that helps in shortening the chemical bonds within the polythene, which in turn makes it easy to decompose.IMG_5063These bags have a shelf life of two years and are affordable in comparison to paper, cloth and jute bags. The bio-degradable plastic can be used as a carry bag and also as a garbage bag.  Do you wish to know how much time does a Biotec bag take to decompose? The answer is 180 days. It is so because of the construction of these bags. The bacteria present in the soil can easily chew on these bags once they are disposed off.IMG_5059This product by Biotech bags comes at an affordable price of Rs. 2.30 and is multipurpose. It comes in two different sizes to offer more utility to the customers. Not only this, the company also manufactures small packages containing four of these bags for placing it in your cars.

IMG_5054Now that you have learned about a 100% harmless option to plastic, we are sure that you will prefer to use this affordable option instead. To get your hands on bio degradable plastic bags you just need to get in touch with the company on 9414070245 or mail them on krn.nagrajan@hotmail.com.

The Rang Malhar Festival: Praying through Paintings

Some prayers are works of art, such that even god would stop and marvel!

10275400_10203018505558198_5206593327659731872_oArtistes of the Pink City worshipped Indra dev, the rain god, through their work yesterday; cars were beautifully hand-painted by these artisans on the occasion of the Rang Malhar festival. It covered Jawahar Kala Kendra, Albert Hall, Tripoliya Bazaar, Sanganeri Gate and Badi Chaupar areas of Jaipur through the festival.

The festival initiated by some of the most renowned craftsmen like Vidhyasagar Upadhyay and Vinay Sharma was organised by the Rajasthan Lalit Kala Academy.

10511569_10203024695592945_8246219192941050731_oThe themes of these paintings were very thoughtful and creative; one car spread the message of saving the environment, the other depicted astrology and sun-signs, some painted the themes of heritage conservation and saving the girl-child. One of the paintings very thematically portrayed a woman taking shelter under a tree to keep herself from sunlight.
