JKK: A Walk Down The Memory Lane of Indian Textile

JKK has always been providing us with a glimpse of art via different exhibitions it hosts. Paintings, music photography and what not, we have had it all at the Jawahar Kala Kendra and it is back again with the amazing textile exhibition.

The exhibition beautifully traces the origin and evolution of aesthetics in Indian textiles dating back to the freedom struggle of 1947, including the use of same as an aid in the freedom movement, to the present day India.

DSC_3784

The wondrously delicate yet the robust textiles of India has survived through decades because of diversity of skills and technologies to portray them, the perpetual vocabulary of motifs and patterns depicting the innovation in traditions which have been passed on through generations.

 The exhibition designed by Reha Sodhi reflects the fields of art and craft, fashion and design through paintings done on cloth, carpets, rugs and saris showcasing works of numerous designers and artists.

In the lights predominant impulses of various periods in India’s post-independence trajectories, the textiles are presented through broad themes.

·         The National Movement, Khadi and the effects of the European-colonial encounter in the early to mid-20th Century

DSC_3747

·          The engagement with International Modernism from the 1950s till today;

DSC_3798.jpg

·         An intense revival period in village-based crafts and textiles beginning with the 1970s which has informed the present ecology of urban design;

DSC_3724

·         The negotiation of roles between artisans-craftspeople, designers and artists;

DSC_3710

·         A return to historical vocabularies from the 1980s onwards which moulds contemporary fashion and mass consumerism; textiles as a means and metaphor for sculpture;

DSC_3782

·         And Indian minimalism.

DSC_3729

With praiseworthy paintings, and notably fine varieties of textile, the Art exhibition at JKK is definitely going to turn a lot many heads.

The exhibition narrates the story of changes in textile industry due to the social, political and economic impacts on India. It takes you for a journey to the times of traditional Indian outfits of Lehanga Choli, to the garments with heavy Ari and Zari work, to the Silk And Brocade Saris, from the Kurtas Of Khadi to Khadi Denims and finally makes you stand face to face the Contemporary Dresses Of Modern India.

To sum it up, the exhibition is a must visit if you find yourself in Jaipur before the 31st of July and is open for public on all working days including Monday.

Kashmir Crafts & Fashion Warm Up The Pink City At JKK- Jaipur

Jawahar Kala Kendra never ceases to attract Jaipurites with its variety of exhibitions and events. This time, the courtesy of JKK has brought for you an exposition of handicrafts of Jammu and Kashmir organised by the directorate of handicrafts, Jammu and Kashmir government, till 7th January. Jaipur Beat dropped in to catch a glimpse of the commendable expo and returned unapologetic-ally with bags full of Kashmiri craft and stories.

JKK

The exhibition has 25 stalls for you to choose from. With intricate handcrafted merchandise, you’ll find for yourself a variety of shawls, phiran, overcoats, caps, handbags, socks, pashmina sarees, stoles, mufflers, gloves, wall hangings, dry fruits, kahwah and the list goes on.

Textile and silk expoBeautiful work at JKK

The shop owners have all kinds of pashmina ranging anything between Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,00,000.

Intricate Kashmiri work

Suhaib, attending Shop No. 14, came a long way from Srinagar to entice us with his elaborate collection of handcrafted shawls. He unfolded an elegant pashmina shawl with the infamous silk thread needlework. This needle work is usually done by a single person to ensure homogeneity of design and it takes around a year to complete one shawl.

Although the art on these shawls is priceless, it will cost around 80,000- 90,000 rupees to own one of these.

Handcrafted shwal at JKK

Rozie, a beautiful woman clad in pink, matching the color on her cheeks, has a collection of the most exotic walnuts. She has for sale Kashmiri dry fruits, kahwa and kesar. The special item on her stall is the rare walnuts which grow on trees found only in their region. The region itself has no more than 150 trees. These are consumed specially to control sugar and cholesterol and cost Rs2000/kg.

If you feel winter shawls are not for you, then what Mr Wani has for you is something you’ll never be able to say no to. Shop No. 8 has for you a range of summer as well as winter shawls so you can enjoy the handcrafted beauty of Jammu and Kashmir round the year.

Winter and summer shawls

Haseena Parwez of Shop No. 22 has been in the handicraft business for about 22 years now. She has a stupendous collection of pashmina, which are crafted by a number of women who work under her organization of Urban Development Agency. She has been rewarded with the Entrepreneurship award 4 times by the NBCFDC. She has taught this art to around 8000 women till date.

The expo is full of such craft with fascinating stories behind them. What we suggest you is to visit the exhibition for some beautiful handicraft to add to your collection and to look at the complexity of the work that these artisans yield.

Jawahar Kala Kendra and its Different Shades!

Most people are familiar with the proud center of art & crafts and in fact a lot more than that with Jawahar Kala Kendra aka JKK in Jaipur. Like the rest of Jaipur’ wisely chalked out architecture and planning,  JKK boasts of an architecture that spellbinds a beholder at just one glance. No doubt, when the place is so unique and the location is worth shooting it is common to capture the same by one and all using own artistic spin.

JKK EntranceHistory of Jawahar Kala Kendra

Dedicated to India’s first Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru, Jawahra Kala Kendra is truly metaphoric to the city of Jaipur i.e. an astonishing synthesis of past and future. A contemporary building based on an archaic notion of the Cosmos; the very same Navgaraha mandala, with one of the squares moved aside and beautiful murals inside, based on cosmology.

IMG_0035 copyJKK was built by Rajasthan Government with the plan prepared by the renowned architect Charles Correa in 1986. The building was ready in 1991 and of course, the plan was inspired by the original city plan of Jaipur, consisting of nine squares with central square left open.

IMG_0109 copy

This multi-arts center has been created  with the purpose of preserving Rajasthani arts and crafts and it was in 1993 that JKK was open to the cultural connoisseurs.

IMG_9932 copyBuilt by Rajasthan government with the purpose of preserving Rajasthani arts and crafts, JKK adapts and applies concepts from ancient architectural principles called the Vastu Vidya.

Behind the Library-JKK

The main building contains six exhibition galleries, open air theatre, auditoriums, dormitories, and coffee house.

IMG_0135 copyEach section of the building resembles the characteristics of the respective planet; for instance, the library is located in the Jupiter section, which attributes to knowledge and wisdom.

IMG_9960
Sunlight falls through the top of the dome and changes its direction every few minutes

The murals from the Jain mythology, the charts and paintings on the ceiling of the central dome formulate the exceptional nature of JKK.

JKK- Central Foyer

However, while preserving the cultural heritage and art of the state, JKK saw age catching up as far as maintenance of its building was concerned. Hence, it was revived and refurbished in 2016.

IMG_0700 copyWith the new lighting and the red sandstone could once again be seen shining clean and attractive enough to draw towards it a swarm of tourists, history lovers, local residents and art aficionados.

IMG_0079 copyRight from the entrance till the exit, every corner, center and even the smallest parts of Jawahar Kala Kendra either tell or make a story.

The building is designed with walls bearing paintings, murals, all of them based on astronomy and cosmology, but there are some which also give an honest tribute to art and theatre.

One of the oldest and most iconic coffee houses of Jaipur – Indian Coffee House, houses in its newly revamped look an admirable mural of Ebrahim Alkazi – a living legend who is one of the most influential Indian theatre directors and drama teachers belonging to 20th-century Indian theatre.

The Coffee House in the lunar section portrays the less revealed aspects of Indian astronomy through the paintings and creativity shown here; even on the coffee – tables. Every table depicts a different phase of Moon as seen in a painting at the coffee house.
