Insight Into The World Of Photography

Photography is beautiful. You can capture every moment of your existence and reminisce those moments for the rest of your lives. Even today when we see our childhood photos or photos of loved ones, there’s a sentimental longing that cannot be expressed in words. It surely is a way of ‘feeling, touching and loving’ as Aaron Siskind said.

Today, when we celebrate the soulful art of photography, Mr Purushottam Diwakar, a talented Photo Journalist at India Today, shares with us his experiences and opinions on being a lensman. He is one of the oldest photo journalists in the city of Jaipur and truly passionate for what he does. Let’s see what Jaipur Beat discovered while interviewing him.

PicsArt_08-19-08.16.44

Q1. From roll cameras to digital cameras, how has photography evolved?

“Earlier, of course, it used to take time to develop pictures in colour labs. It was a long and hectic process. With digital cameras taking over, photography has revolutionised, in a good way. Gladly, photo journalists can look at the pictures instantly without having to sit in a colour lab for hours. Moreover, they can edit the pictures on computers which make the whole concept beneficial.”

Q2. Considering how easy photography has become with digitisation and the fact that you can take hundreds of shots in one go, do you think the photo journalists these days do not understand how its important?

“No, I disagree! An experienced photographer would never look for short cuts and take the digitisation for granted. Casually clicking hundreds of pictures and not analysing the scenery has its own disadvantages. Firstly, nobody can overlook the storage problem that can be caused by clicking so many pictures. Secondly, nobody has the time to select that one good picture out of hundred pictures. Most importantly, these days, photo journalists are supposed to immediately send pictures to journalists for news. Hence there is no scope for short cuts.”

PicsArt_08-19-08.18.31

Q3. What is your opinion on staged photography?

“Those who perform staged photography are the reason why India currently stands on 136th position in photography out of 180 countries. Honestly, I feel ashamed to say that my profession is not doing well. I believe the sole reason for India’s such position is malpractices like staged photography, and not lack of technology or money, as some people might think. You cannot force a kid to cry or artificially design a photograph. With such large viewership and amazing talents in the country, such ethical misconducts are a disgrace.”

PicsArt_08-19-08.21.17

Q4. With mobile phones cameras’ resolution rising constantly, in future is it possible for mobile phones to completely replace cameras?

“I don’t think so. Surely there are times when we use mobile phones for capturing some shots, but this does not mean they can do the job of a camera. Experts would always stick to cameras, no matter what! I believe such a day would never come.”

Well this was surely enlightening. Our experience with Mr Purushottsam was a memorable one. We hope you too enjoyed it.

Jaipur Beat wishes you a very Happy Photography Day! 😀

Like and share, if you too love photography!!!!!

On this World Photography Day, we bring to you the most clicked places of Jaipur from Instagram.

Built in 1799 under the rule of Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, this beautiful monument of our city has been renovated over time only to turn much more glorious than before. It is known to have been built with little jharokhas and has 953 windows in all. The interesting reason behind the unique designing of this place was that the royal ladies were not supposed to come out of purdah. Hence, these jharokhas provided the royal ladies a good view of daily life outside the palace. The intricate detailing in the windows and jharokhas along with the unique five storey honeycomb-like structure, account to one of the most clicked and admired places of Jaipur. Hawa Mahal is also known as Palace of Winds or Palace of the Breeze.

Jaipur

Jawahar Kala Kendra and its Different Shades!

Most people are familiar with the proud center of art & crafts and in fact a lot more than that with Jawahar Kala Kendra aka JKK in Jaipur. Like the rest of Jaipur’ wisely chalked out architecture and planning,  JKK boasts of an architecture that spellbinds a beholder at just one glance. No doubt, when the place is so unique and the location is worth shooting it is common to capture the same by one and all using own artistic spin.

JKK EntranceHistory of Jawahar Kala Kendra

Dedicated to India’s first Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru, Jawahra Kala Kendra is truly metaphoric to the city of Jaipur i.e. an astonishing synthesis of past and future. A contemporary building based on an archaic notion of the Cosmos; the very same Navgaraha mandala, with one of the squares moved aside and beautiful murals inside, based on cosmology.

IMG_0035 copyJKK was built by Rajasthan Government with the plan prepared by the renowned architect Charles Correa in 1986. The building was ready in 1991 and of course, the plan was inspired by the original city plan of Jaipur, consisting of nine squares with central square left open.

IMG_0109 copy

This multi-arts center has been created  with the purpose of preserving Rajasthani arts and crafts and it was in 1993 that JKK was open to the cultural connoisseurs.

IMG_9932 copyBuilt by Rajasthan government with the purpose of preserving Rajasthani arts and crafts, JKK adapts and applies concepts from ancient architectural principles called the Vastu Vidya.

IMG_0114 copy
Behind the Library-JKK

The main building contains six exhibition galleries, open air theatre, auditoriums, dormitories, and coffee house.

IMG_0135 copyEach section of the building resembles the characteristics of the respective planet; for instance, the library is located in the Jupiter section, which attributes to knowledge and wisdom.

IMG_9960
Sunlight falls through the top of the dome and changes its direction every few minutes

The murals from the Jain mythology, the charts and paintings on the ceiling of the central dome formulate the exceptional nature of JKK.

JKK- Central Foyer

However, while preserving the cultural heritage and art of the state, JKK saw age catching up as far as maintenance of its building was concerned. Hence, it was revived and refurbished in 2016.

IMG_0700 copyWith the new lighting and the red sandstone could once again be seen shining clean and attractive enough to draw towards it a swarm of tourists, history lovers, local residents and art aficionados.

IMG_0079 copyRight from the entrance till the exit, every corner, center and even the smallest parts of Jawahar Kala Kendra either tell or make a story.

IMG_0028 copy

The building is designed with walls bearing paintings, murals, all of them based on astronomy and cosmology, but there are some which also give an honest tribute to art and theatre.

Hastkaar Yantra based on medieval Rajasthani painting-JKK

One of the oldest and most iconic coffee houses of Jaipur – Indian Coffee House, houses in its newly revamped look an admirable mural of Ebrahim Alkazi – a living legend who is one of the most influential Indian theatre directors and drama teachers belonging to 20th-century Indian theatre.

IMG_9952

The Coffee House in the lunar section portrays the less revealed aspects of Indian astronomy through the paintings and creativity shown here; even on the coffee – tables. Every table depicts a different phase of Moon as seen in a painting at the coffee house.

Adjoining the main building of JKK, a rural complex housed in it 9.5 acre complex known as Shilpgram is the venue for fairs, haat bazaars and festivals.
