“The GT Road”- A 2600 km Gastronomical Journey in Jaipur

At times, a simple road trip to nowhere is the solution to overcome every problem. Well, we are taking you on a new journey and to the new destination that introduces us to new ways of celebrating- The GT Road. Here, we’re talking about a new restaurant which has been recently launched in Jaipur with a very novel concept, based on a 2600 km long highway known as ‘The Grand Trunk Road’. The Grand Trunk Road is considered one of Asia’s longest roads ever constructed in the era of Sher Shah Suri. As The GT road starts from Chittagong, Bangladesh and ends at Kabul, Afghanistan, the restaurant offers specialities of all those cities that are covered by GT Road. Isn’t it, interesting?

the gt road1.jpg

The exciting part is that it genuinely makes you relive the bygone era that it is based upon. Let us give you an insight of this beautiful gastronomical journey

As you enter, there is an eye-catching Victorian century’s polished Rolls Royce to welcome you. Inside the restaurant, the charm of the antique shotguns, rifles, and other artefacts like utensils give you a sneak peek into the chronicles of the old days.

Moving on, let us take a look at the food.

This place is one of Jaipur’s rare live food counter providers. There is barbeque available for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians. The options here vary from Aatishti Paneer Tikka of Panipat, Mughfali Aloo Masala Tikki of Ambala to Panch Puran Kumbh of Amritsar, Chilli Potato of China Town Kolkata in vegetarian section and in non vegetarian there is lehsooni Murg Tikka, Burra Kabab, Gilafi Mutton Seekh of Lahore to Macchi ka tikka of Kolkata to satiate your taste buds. And that’s not it, there is a separate chaat counter for all the chaat lovers. The chaat options vary from Dahi Bhalle, Papdi Chaat to Raj Kachori, Palak Patta Chaat.

But wait, don’t overindulge as there’s still more to come in the buffet and later in desserts, cause we know you would not want to miss anything ☺

The buffet options here are selective and will change after every 15 days (YAYY!). The beautifully laid buffet counter with metal utensils preserving the age-old charm undoubtedly creates the traditional warmth in the atmosphere. On the buffet counter, in vegetarian from Dal Makhani of Amritsar, Kadi pakoda of Jalandhar, Pindi chole of Rawalpindi to the garlic noodles from China Town of Kolkata and Biryani of Allahabad.  There was a whole variety of Non-veg delights- Aloo Gosht from Lahore, Murg Makkanwala from Kabul, Machar Jhol, Murg Masala of Delhi to Murg Dum Biryani of Lahore to Baluchi Gosht Biryani of Kabul.

non-veg main coursemain course

No doubt, the food is well researched and well crafted. Even basic ingredients and recipes are paid attention to. The chef told us that a recipe as simple as Sirka Pyaaz has been researched and brought from Ludhiana. For desserts, there are tiny portions available so that you can easily try all of them even after an almost full stomach. As a matter of fact, the chefs themselves have visited cities like Delhi, Panipat, Kolkata, Kanpur, Aurangabad, Varanasi etc. in order to bring authenticity to the meals.

The restaurant also has a full bar offering a good range of cocktails.

The pleasant music, antique décor sets the perfect mood for indulging into a food journey covering 2600 km long Grand Trunk road. The delectable Barbeque and Buffet’ is what makes The G T Road so special amongst food connoisseurs.

So, the next time you feel or wish to go for a road oops food trip, you know where to head to ☺

Bon Appetit!

Beer, Jar Potatoes and Karari Roti

One thing is sure that Jaipur no longer gives you monotonous fine dining set ups.  With the mushroom growth of cafes in town, mark it with any new café  you will get ample choice to experiment with food and ambience both.  And, we at Jaipur Beat can never miss to introduce any such interesting place coming up in town. Here’s bringing to you our first hand experience of one such amazing place- ‘Jaipur adda’.

Have you ever wondered what Jaipur looked like from the terrace of a building at night? Where you could actually experience a little wind in your hair while oodles of mouth-watering food being served on your plate? Where you can actually have Khana Pina over some Gup Shup with friends?

6.jpg

The answer to all these questions lies in ‘Jaipur Adda’ that is perched on the top of the Nirvana Hometel Hotel at a busy juncture of Khasa Kothi Circle. The place is arranged over two floors (upper and lower deck) offering a spectacular terrace seating overlooking Country Inn Hotel and Suites and the Jaipur metro track.

Nicely dated décor with cheery setting of the fine wood furnishings and the amazing wall art give the space a quirky feel,  hence set this place apart from the usual cafés.

About Ambience-Indoor and Outdoor

The café promises a fabulous experience and the overall calm ambiance radiates positive vibes where you can simply get your drink and watch the sun going down the skyline and the sunrays actually peeping through the bamboo chick curtains.

2.jpg

Not just that, one can even take a roller coaster ride on time machine from Jaipur Adda, as your senses are soaked on one side experiencing the ecstasy of the moving metro and the busy roads of today’s modern Jaipur while on the contrary witness the magnificent Nahargarh Fort which is the reminiscence of the Jaipur’s royal times.

15.jpg

Not just its romantic ambience, the food here is equally good  in quality and price both.

About Food-Serves both veg and non veg!

If you are going with friends we suggest you to go for Beer Bucket. A big wooden barrel filled with plenty of ice is placed right next  to you and delectable Jar potatoes (roasted baby potatoes tossed in harissa sauce which is a spicy paste made out of hot chilli peppers and other spices) was just perfect to go with the spicy conversation among friends.

Out of the elaborate menu of Food and Drinks, we tried Tub of shots– some times be crazy and it’s real good fun to say cheers with shots of colors and sparkling lights.

We were keen on experimenting with something innovative. So we tried –Smacked cucumber, Sichuan peppercorn, garlic salad. A crispy snack is always welcome, on Chef’s recommendation we had ‘Karari Roti’- crispy large kadahi shaped roti sprinkled with olive oil and topped with chopped tomato onion. Other delights were the Bombay toast, Fried egg parsi influenced and also Zucchini, pineapple, carrot, raddish slaw red honey mustard, no doubt all the preparations surprised us.

Niros Jaipur : Celebrating a glorious journey of 65 years

“I have explored everything from top shot five star hotels to the best dhaabas, and always end up eating at Niros, because this is where my heart lies”, says Bina Kak on the joyous occasion of 65th birth anniversary of Niros today.

Niros Jaipur Beat

There are so many cafes and restaurants opening up almost every day in Jaipur giving an equal competition to all the oldies, but as they say ‘Old is gold’ ! Among all these new outlets appealing to the teenagers and college going crowd in Jaipur, stands a restaurant amidst the most enticing shopping and foodie area of pink city: Niros.

While walking around the streets of M.I. road after a round of shopping, you spot a small restaurant called NirosNOT ! You never ‘spot’ Niros, you know Niros by heart, by mind and especially by tongue 😉 This restaurant that lies in the lane of many more eateries, ice cream places, and shopping outlets, but what’s absolutely interesting is that it stands out and shines just like an old wine that keeps getting better and dearer each day.

Niros Jaipur Beat

Started by late Ved Prakash Pardal in 1949 and now run by his sons Rajnish and Vinay Pardal, Niros was the first place in Jaipur to serve Continental food, and good continental food ! Despite being popular and loved, Niros never rested on its laurels and kept on working towards excellence and soon became the only centrally air conditioned restaurant in the city in 1962 and the first one to bless Jaipurites with Chinese food on the menu in 1970. From a classic restaurant, Niros went on to become a landmark by which every other place, lane and shop was known to all the locals and tourist guides in Jaipur. We can say that before Google Maps came in, Niros was the definition of maps in Jaipur !!

With a garden ambiance complimented by potted plants and murals by the internationally acclaimed artist, Satish Gujral, Niros has a simple yet a very posh ambiance. “As Niros completes 65 glorious years today, I feel extremely nostalgic and miss my dad more than ever. I want to thank all those who love us and have made this possible and look forward to their visits and patronage hereafter” – Rajnish Pardal, owner of Niros.

When asked about what Niros means to the Jaipurites as it completes 65 years of success today, 60 year old Shekhar Verma , a retired professor of University of Rajasthan and a food connoisseur says ‘In early 70s, I used to go there every day for their special Keema Samosas which were available only from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m.  People used to queue up to have those amazing things which were available only at Niros’

Niros Jaipur Beat
Shekhar Verma, Retired professor, Universirty of Rajasthan

“The subtle interiors, cozy ambiance and soft contemporary English music have been the most appealing features of Niros and if I say I am in love with their Chicken A La Bomb Femme, it will be an under statement.” Shekhar Verma adds.

Indian politician, social activist and Bollywood actress Bina Kak is someone who loves to explore different places but somehow, Niros just does it for her. “Even though it’s quite irritating not being able to like any other place in Jaipur, what’s truly amazing and satisfying is the way they treat us. The music is extremely good and still not too overpowering. At the same time you will always find the who’s who comfortably sitting and enjoying their time. Some of their chefs are as old as the restaurant and that’s probably the secret behind their consistent recipes.”

Bina Kak Niros Jaipur Beat

Her top favourites are the Chicken bharta, fish, Niros special desserts especially Caramel custardKidneys on toast and French onion soup. “The best part is that you get to have the paan of your choice at the end of the meal.” Bina Kak adds.

Not just Bina Kak, even her daughter Amrita Kak, a popular singer who’s now married and resides in the Punjabi hub of Delhi, gets constant craving for the food of Niros to the extent that the delicious Chicken Tikka masala is packed and sent to her from Jaipur to Delhi.
The restaurant has received the opportunity to serve various renowned personalities like the Ex- Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir, Farooq Abdullah and his son, Omar Abdullah, Indian film actors & directors, cricketers like Kapil Dev, artists etc.

Some locals who belong to Jaipur and have been staying outside for a few years also expressed their views on Niros. Nitin Hajela, now working in Bangalore, says “For me, Niros is one of the iconic restaurants of Jaipur. My memories here date back to my childhood days when it was always a matter of joy and privilege to dine here with family and relatives. It was here I had my first tryst with continental cuisine. Amongst Rajasthani cuisine, Laal maans is the most savoured dish though the entire menu which is worth trying. I never miss to visit this place in my trips to Jaipur”

After a nostalgic trip with the older generation, Jaipur Beat also asked the younger generation as to what role does Niros play in their present day life. Swati Thapar, 25, working for a Social media firm says “Whenever there is an occasion in the family or friends, the first place that comes to my mind is Niros. Apart from chicken and fish, I love to have the Spanish omelette and Cheese macaroni at Niros”

There are very few things which never change and if they do, you keep loving them more every day.
So all you Jaipurites, the weekend is knocking at your doors so how about quickly wrap up and celebrate by going out tonight to Niros and experience the joy of sharing good food and good times together !!

Jaipur Jungle- Restaurant which takes you to the wild

Bored of going to the same restaurants?  We have just explored a new place in town that will surely interest you and your friends and at the same time will satisfy your appetite.

JJ4

Yes, the new dine- in place, Jaipur Jungle, a place with the ambiance and the feel of the jungle.Though theme based restaurants are not new for the city, as Jaipurities have already experienced dining at ‘Jungle safari’ based on similar Jungle theme. Those who have visited Jungle safari will not find this any different but for others it definitely is an interesting place.

Located on 6th and the top most Floors, Business Avenue, Near Pink Square Mall, Jaipur Jungle serves variety of Indian and International cuisine. Jaipur Beat visited the place on Sunday and found that the interior was pretty dark but it brings a new kind of ambiance with a family appeal to it.

JJ3

One will definitely take some time to look around before finally picking up the menu card.

Even the staff was dressed in the jungle ranger uniform. Menu was really lavish, offering wide range of starters and the main course starting as Rasoi Ki khasiyat, Paneer Ki Khasiyat with 12 types of Paneer dishes and Dal Khaas e Nawabi offers not only one two or three but 6 types of pulses continued to rice dishes, papads, salads in veg. Non-veg main course was attention grabbing offering food from Jungle Ke Khazane se and Samundar Ki Gharai se for seafood.

JJ6

We decided to order one Paneer dish, one veg dal makhani and a chicken dish. The food though cooked well but proves too rich for the stomach. Masala Papad was interesting as topped up with bikaneri bhujia.

The staff was very attentive towards the guests and hence we had no complaints in terms of service. It counts for a lot these days. There was no gap in the service and refill of chapattis (breads) and curries. The staff encourages you taste their specialties.

What scores for this restaurant is their level of service. Even if the jungle setting doesn’t amuse you your kids surely will enjoy every bit of this place.

JJ2 (1)

All in all the Jaipur Jungle was a pleasant experience. The food could be friendlier to the stomach. The experience of jungle is new and interesting and one must visit it once. So, Get ready for a complete experience of fine dinning in the wild.
